Today's Featured Wine #3: 2006 Poderi Colla Dolcetto

Great Wine Profile

We don't mess around with swill at CellarThief...nope, only great wines at stellar prices. Here is another great find from the cellar...

2006 Poderi Colla Dolcetto

There is something great about simple and beautiful wines - they don't try to do too much, but what they do...they do well. This is one of those little gems that is great to sip, and mixes well with good friends and all that great food you are serving at next week's 12-course dinner party (I just got the invitation - thanks! I think I have to wash my pet porcupine that night and that always takes a while - but, I'll try to make it).

2006 Poderi Colla Dolcetto

Robert Parker - 89 points

Wine Advocate: The 2006 Dolcetto d’Alba reveals lovely clarity and precision in its varietal aromas and flavors. A refined, medium-bodied Dolcetto, it should be at its best over the next few years. It perfectly captures the elegant house style of this estate. Simply put, this Dolcetto is a gem. Poderi Colla is a property worth keeping an eye on. While the high-end Barolos and Barbarescos are often outstanding, some of the lesser-known wines also offer considerable quality.
CELLARTHIEF TRANSLATION: Dang these folks are making some good juice in the almost ridiculously beautiful hills of Alba. This daily sipper is a great intro to their vino, at a price that will make you weep for joy like you just scored tix to see your favorite Serie A team play a crucial match. (don't worry, if you don't know what that means...you're probably not alone).

Poderi Colla Winery: Owner

Tino Colla

Poderi Colla Winery: Region

Alba (Langhe), Italy (Wine Italy)

Poderi Colla: Background

The first Colla with a winemaking tradition started making wine in 1703 (yep, you read that right - isn't that the year that first Twinkie rolled off the production line?) The family winemaking tradition continued when Tino Colla and his niece Federica combined talents in 1993. The winery owns three farms (hence the name of the winery - which means "Colla Farms"), each distinct.

By owning three different vineyard locations in Alba, the Collas are able to make all the great wines of the area...from Barbarescos that'll make your heart skip, to Barolos that will make your feet skip, to Dolcettos that you can proudly serve your "Uncle Skip".

Poderi Colla Winery: Wines Made

Poderi Colla makes some stellar Barolos (Nebbiolo), Barbarescos (Nebbiolo), and even a really yummy Pinot Noir.

Poderi Colla Winery: Food Pairing

In Italy, Dolcetto is often served during the 3rd course of a marathon meal - after a couple whites and before the big guns come out. The wines pair best with foods that aren't too rich but aren't too light either:

  • Cheese: Gouda, Mozzarella
  • Seafood: Fish Dishes With Lots of Cream and Butter (I know it's tough)
  • Pasta: Anything with red sauces or pesto (unless you have to peel back the wrapper and heat on high for 3 minutes)
  • Other Suggestions: Fried Chicken and Hamburgers

Poderi Colla Winery: Wine Style.

This wine is "Light & Fruity!
Oh Yeah...these wines are like grabbing fresh berries right out of the fields and throwin' them down so quickly you stain your lips and chin with drippy goodness. Like jamming a handful of strawberries just hitting their stride into your mouth, these wines are lip-smackers that get your mouth watering and are perfect for simpler foods or picnics on your kitchen floor (who needs tables anyway!) These wines are knock-down, drag-out delicious with delicious fruity flavors.

Wine Italy. Wine Langhe. Wine Alba. Other wines to try: Poggio Argentiera.

Wine Into Water!

Making A Difference

Every week, 42,000 people die because they lack access to clean water. 90% of those people are kids under 5 years old. We are proud to offer great wines at stellar prices.  But, we also are excited to be able to make a difference through our efforts. Therefore, we have partnered with some wonderful people who are dedicating their lives to providing access to clean water for people worldwide.  For every bottle of wine you purchase, we donate water - it's as simple as that.  Further, we work closely with our wineries and suppliers to be able to donate additional water if we sell out of the wines we feature.  We call this additional water "the bounty".  So, please tell your friends about CellarThief so we can keep offering great wines at stellar prices and make a big impact in the process.  Thank you and Cheers!

The Bounty

Help us sell out and we'll make an even bigger difference together!

50 extra days of clean drinking water

We're a bunch of sell outs and we are proud of it...but, we're even more proud that selling out means make an even bigger difference. Almost 1 Billion people on the planet don't have clean drinking water - that's 1 in 8 people on the planet. Not having clean drinking water leads to terrible illness and death - in fact 42,000 people die every week from a lack of clean, safe water with 90% of those deaths being children 5 years old or younger. If you help us sell this wine out, the Bounty is awarded! We'll tag on another 50 days of clean water for every bottle of wine sold! That totals 5 months of clean water per bottle of wine - that can make a difference! Thanks for buying through CellarThief and let's go thieves - let's drink well and make a difference in the process!

Thanks - You're Darn Cool!
