Today's Featured Wine #2: 2004 Poggio Argentiera Finisterre

Great Wine Profile

We don't mess around with swill at CellarThief...nope, only great wines at stellar prices. Here is another great find from the cellar...

2004 Poggio Argentiera Finisterre

Looking for something a little bit different, but still downright delicious? This Italian beauty fits that bill. It also fits the "something that can be drunk now and be cellared for a few years" bill, the "hey check me out...I can show off how much I know wine because I found this gem few know about" bill and the "I'm looking for a spectacular wine with a cool package that preferably has yellow in the label" bill. This blend of Syrah and Alicante will tickle the palate and leave it laughing until it almost needs to pee its pants.

Poggio Argentiera Winery: 2004 Finisterre

Wine & Spirits Magazine - 92 points

WINE & SPIRITS MAGAZINE: A rich red for chocolate lovers, this 50/50 blend of alicante and syrah shows a lot of oak extract at first, while there's plenty of equally dense fruit underneath that evolves with air. The tannin is expansive, with a ferrous character that keeps the structure firm and allows the pretty fruit to show through. Probably best six to eight years from the vintage.
CELLARTHIEF TRANSLATION: A big dog - tons of fruit and big mouth puckering tannins with a lip curling pay-off like delicious chocolate all gooey from being left in your pocket on a warm day. Throw a couple of these in your cellar and you'll be happy you did - especially at this smokin' price!!

Poggio Argentiera Winery: Owner

Gianpaolo Paglia and Justine Keeling

Poggio Argentiera Winery: Region

Tuscany, Italy (Wine Italy)

Poggio Argentiera Winery: Background

Gianpaolo Paglia, an agronomist born and bred in Maremma, and Justine Keeling, an English marketing manager, bought the estate in 1997. Poggio Argentiera is today composed of two estates situated in two different areas of Tuscany's Maremma, near the town of Grosseto. In this impossibly stunning area of the world the winery owns two properties with different micro-climates but each with enough potential and charm that you wouldn't mind throwing a tent down and living there for the next...ohhh...50 years.

Even though it was only founded in 2007, it has already acquired an impressive record of awards and critical acclaim, both in Italy and worldwide from all the top dogs.

Poggio Argentiera Winery: Wines Made

Poggio Argentiera makes some wild and crazily delicious wines from some wild and crazily fun grapes like Sangiovese, Ansonica, and Vermentino.

Poggio Argentiera Winery: Food Pairing

The 2004 Poggio Argentiera Finisterre should be paired with hefty, rich and hedonistic foods that you'll be ashamed you ate the next morning:

  • Cheese: Any of the incredible cheeses from Tuscany
  • Meat: Tuscan Steak
  • Pasta: Gnocchi with meat sauce, meat raviolis with even more meat in the sauce
  • Other Suggestions: Anything...and I do mean anything...wrapped in bacon (heck, if it doesn't pair well, you'll still be eating bacon!!!); Wild Boar - if you dare (cue the scary B-Movie music)

Poggio Argentiera Winery: Wine Style.

This wine is a "Big Bomber"!
Like all "Big Bomber" wines - this one will almost make you go weak in the knees. With each sip, your teeth turn a deeper shade of red and your appetite starts roarin' for a big steak. These wines are mostly unruly in their youth (who isn't) though they are fun in their extra bit of danger (again, who isn't). Put them down in the cellar for a while and these wines will mature and shed the exuberance of youth without losing their fiery spirit.

More great wine from Italy. Wine Italy.

Today's Featured Wine #1: 2006 Fetish "The Watcher"

Great Wine Profile

We don't mess around with swill at CellarThief...nope, only great wines at stellar prices.  Here is another great find from the cellar...

2006 Fetish "The Watcher" Shiraz

The 2006 Fetish Winery "The Watcher" is our reminder to stay balanced during the holiday season. Don't worry if Jimmy's stocking is a little bit more full than Suzy's. Don't worry if you can't finish that whole Turkey leg your Aunt Mabel put on your plate. And, don't freak out and toss the guitar out the window if your nephew trounces you in Guitar Hero. Nope, the holidays are about staying balanced and enjoying the moment. Great wines are about balance too and this Shiraz out of Australia is a great example.

Fetish Winery: 2006 "The Watcher" Shiraz

Wine Spectator - 91 points

WINE SPECTATOR: Supple, generous and deftly balanced to show plenty of ripe cherry and plum fruit, shaded with sweet spices. But there's not a lot of weight, and this finishes with elegance and restraint. Shiraz. Best from 2010 through 2020.
CELLARTHIEF TRANSLATION: It's got it all...yummy fruit, some tongue tingling spice, and enough tannin to let the wine roll along for many years. This is one to grab for now and then put a few in the cellar to please the palate for years to come!

Fetish Winery: Owner

Wine celeb Rolf Binder.

Fetish Winery: Region

Barossa Valley, Australia (Wine Australia)

Fetish Winery: Background

Celebrity winemaker...Check. Incredible fruit from the Barossa Valley...Check. Stunning wine packaging that'll make you proud to pop it out for any event big or small...Check. Fetish was founded by Celeb wine stud Rolf Binder with the aim of crafting dynamite wines that are a product of spending a lot of time in the vineyard. Each wine Binder makes is down right delicious with tons of character without sacrificing balance.

Founded in 2004, Rolf Binder's aim was to combine a high-quality wine, a prestigious appellation and a celebrity winemaker all wrapped up in cutting edge packaging. Well, we're glad Rolf had the idea and certainly would say that he has already achieved his aim. Rolf is making some great wines with grip and balance and a long life ahead of them. Each of his wines (he is up to making three now) can stand proud on the table for Monday evening left-overs all the way up to an Anniversary celebratory dinner at the swankiest restaurant in town.

Fetish Winery: Wines Made

Fetish makes a small collection of delicious vino including this Shiraz, a great Shiraz/Grenache Blend and an impossible-not-to-like Moscato

Fetish Winery: Food Pairing

The 2006 Fetish "The Watcher" Shiraz should be paired with balanced foods that have flavor but aren't too rich. Some ideas for pairings include:

  • Cheese: Sheep Milk Cheeses (Here Sheepy, Sheepy, Sheepy), British Farmhouse Cheddar
  • Meat: BBQ Ribs, Smoked Turkey, Venison
  • Seafood: Salmon or Seared Tuna (Put away the can opener - talking about the real deal here)
  • Other Suggestions: Paella; Anything that glides on water and goes "Quack Quack

Fetish Winery: Wine Style.

This wine is considered "Rich & Jammy"!
This wine is in-between a Rich and Jammy one and a Big Bomber. Other wines like "The Watcher" are mouth-coating wines that you can just as easily cut with a fork as you can sip through a straw, these wines aim to please and will wow any crowd. The BBQ is rollin', the ribs are a-blazin' and the good times are hapenin'. These wines can be cut with a fork and, though aren't usually sweet, fill your mouth with ripe raspberries like it's the heat of the summer. These will please all types of folks - even the wine uber-geek in all of us.

Wine Australia.  Other wine to try: Fetish "Playmates" and Chapel hill Shiraz

Wine Into Water!

pic

Making A Difference

Every week, 42,000 people die because they lack access to clean water. 90% of those people are kids under 5 years old. We are proud to offer great wines at stellar prices.  But, we also are excited to be able to make a difference through our efforts. Therefore, we have partnered with some wonderful people who are dedicating their lives to providing access to clean water for people worldwide.  For every bottle of wine you purchase, we donate water - it's as simple as that.  Further, we work closely with our wineries and suppliers to be able to donate additional water if we sell out of the wines we feature.  We call this additional water "the bounty".  So, please tell your friends about CellarThief so we can keep offering great wines at stellar prices and make a big impact in the process.  Thank you and Cheers!

The Bounty

Help us sell out and we'll make an even bigger difference together!

50 extra days of clean drinking water

We're a bunch of sell outs and we are proud of it...but, we're even more proud that selling out means make an even bigger difference. Almost 1 Billion people on the planet don't have clean drinking water - that's 1 in 8 people on the planet. Not having clean drinking water leads to terrible illness and death - in fact 42,000 people die every week from a lack of clean, safe water with 90% of those deaths being children 5 years old or younger. If you help us sell this wine out, the Bounty is awarded! We'll tag on another 50 days of clean water for every bottle of wine sold! That totals 5 months of clean water per bottle of wine - that can make a difference! Thanks for buying through CellarThief and let's go thieves - let's drink well and make a difference in the process!

Thanks - You're Darn Cool!
