Perfection abounded during the 2014 grape-growing season up and down California, most magnificently perhaps in Lodi, the state’s most idiosyncratic AVA.

Lodi is weird. Just look at the place, it certainly does not gibe with what many of us consider to be ‘normal’ wine country. And weird, in that while Lodi has a wine history as long and as storied as Napa or Sonoma, wines made from here continue to sell for way way less. Well, one wine drinker’s weirdness is another one’s boon! Now no longer with us, the defunct Cabpothesis put forth a purple-hued wonder in the outstanding vintage of 2014. It’s a rich and palate-staining red with mulberry and blackcurrant fruit accented by warm, just sweet caramel and cedar. Old-vine fruit costs and arm and a leg when grown in a comparable vineyard in the Napa Valley. Thanks to Lodi’s continued (relative) obscurity, particularly when it comes to Cabernet, this beautifully crafted old-vine Cab is a true steal.

Much of this Cab’s gorgeous complexity is owed to the ancient, gnarled vines from which it was sourced.

The 2014 vintage was a smashing success throughout California, and was especially notable for Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Central Valley’s Lodi AVA enjoys a Mediterranean climate with ample wintertime rain, hot summers and well-draining soils. The conditions could not be better for rich, concentrated red wine.

This 2014 was Cabpothesis’ last vintage. The label, which was under the umbrella of the Purple Wine & Spirits Co. and earned accolades from the Wine Enthusiast during the course of its short lifetime, was discontinued after this release.

This rich, ripe and smooth old vine example from Cabpothesis offers a fine depth of black fruit flavour and is crafted in an immediately accessible style.

Red fruit driven, lots of acid from the Sacramento delta’s cooler evenings. Bruised red plum, dragon fruit, red licorice, fruit leather of black cherry. Loads of old vine fruit here showcases the region's growing history. More than a century old, this vineyard was planted in 1910 and has become one of the go to spots for Cab and Zin in the Lodi region. Drink now and often at this easy going price. Fantastic daily drinker. -WB4/17
