From the Valley of Wine and Roses - as the locals affectionately call the Robertson region - comes a classic vintage whose merits are quite impressive. The land of rich, fruit-driven reds delivered a “complex and assertive” Cab according to Wine Enthusiast while showcasing some of the best of South Africa. Its restrained ripeness is admirable and the aromatic complexity stems from the region’s distinct herbal character. It’s structured, shaped and completely Cabernet Sauvignon.

We’re fans of 2007 as it delivered some fantastic late-ripening fruit. This Cab benefited from the season’s second half where it achieved a beautifully balanced ripening status and received its great tannin structure. We invite our Members to discover what South Africa has hidden away for so many years. Seriously Cab-lovers, this is a hot value!

Reasons why we love it
Just a couple years back, the New York Times boasted of how South Africa “is one of the greatest sources for moderately priced cabernet sauvignon on the planet today.” We believe this vintage takes South African Cab to a new level making us reminiscent of Napa Valley some 30 years ago.

When you age gracefully, time knows no limits. Such is the case for one of the Western Cape’s oldest wineries. Rietvallei (Reed Valley) has farm roots dating back to 1864 and has been aging as luxuriously as its Cabs. Koos Burger, at 70 years young, farmed the estate and planted the Muscadel vineyard in 1908. Today, this vineyard is the oldest of its kind in South Africa.

Kobus Burger is now Rietvallei’s cellarmaster. That’s right, the estate is still in the family with the sixth generation running the show. Kobus is well known for the quality of wine coming out of his cellar where Cabernet Sauvignon is right at home. He is also known as the region's Cabernet Franc pioneer. He has reached the “big time” on the “other side of the mountain.”

Blackcurrant, cassis and violets are noticeable on the bouquet which takes time to unfurl and show its true nuanced beauty. The palate offers up more cassis, fruitcake and blackcurrants, tinged with deep mocha notes and a hint of violets. Refined and elegant with a layered, structured complexity. Powerful too, with a brooding, dark mid-palate. Beautifully poised, balanced and focused with lovely precision in use of oak, ripeness of fruit and overall cohesion. A soft, silky and seductive wine which lingers long.

Enjoy with grilled veal chops or roast pork or a fantastic piece of steak.

Wine Reviews

"Coffee, cigarbox and mocha aromas and flavors characterize this Rietvallei red. Complex and assertive, the wine unfolds with a chewy but poised intensity. The lingering finish has a tobacco-like touch. Pair with smoked meats, rich stews."- Wine Enthusiast

The 2007 Estate Cab from Rietvallei is holding up very well, it’s been stored properly and was clearly built to age.  Ripe black cherry, blackberry and cassis mix on the classic palate, with notes of dark earth, graphite and cedar adding complexity.  The wine is still drinking in its prime, with dark chocolate and roasted coffee notes highlighting the chewy tannin and balanced acidity.  Enjoy now through 2020. - DZ Jan 2017
