'One of the Most Exciting Regions in the World'

As ongoing fans of Palazzo Malgara, it's fair to say our Team was more than a little excited to get this wine (finally) into the States. Sourced from the Puglia terroir - flat, dry, hot and creating Italy’s “heel” - this is a classic blend from the region: Primitivo, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. The result is one of the region’s long-established styles that is powerful and rustic.

Reasons why we love it:

  • A favorite Direct Import. When our Sourcing Team found this gem of a winery they were stumbling on some of the world’s most gorgeous scenery and delighting in the local food scenes. And man, were we so excited to finally bring our Members some wines out of Southern Italy! The return of the label to our inventory is proof of its fantastic nature.
  • The winery. Founded in 1990, Palazzo Malgara checks all of our boxes for a top Sicilian wine producer. Two famed Italian winemakers focus on southern Italy’s native grape varietals with premium care to create beautiful wines with serious varietal character.
  • High-quality agriculture. Sicily enjoys a famed position in the production of high-quality agriculture and in 2013 the large island produced nearly 160 million gallons of wine, second only to the Veneto. That’s a lot of wine! Lucky for you, our Sourcing Team searched high and low throughout the vintage to bring you some of its best examples, including this hard-hitting blend.
  • One for Cab fans. This wine’s surprising prowess and big presence is the perfect complement to the palates of our Cab-lovers. Pair it with your favorite meats for that evening of over-the-top delicious, big and robust flavors.

Fruit-forward well-balanced wine with structure yet elegant & soft. Dark berry fruit flavors, with notes of wood & hints of tobacco, licorice.

Cosimo Loia's estate is situated on the eastern slopes of the hills outside Montalcino. The entire property covers an area of approximately 15 hectares (37 acres) at an altitude of 310 meters (about 1,000 feet).

Originally from Benevento (in Campania), Cosimo came to "Brunello land" when he married a woman from Montalcino. He fell in love with this part of Tuscany as well, and during the 1980s began to dedicate himself to wine. Palazzo's vineyards encompass 5 hectares (12 acres) and are located next to fine producers like Cerbaiona and Salvioni.

There have been major structural changes in the estate over the past few years: the arrival of consulting enologist Fabrizio Ciufoli has raised the quality level, and the production has also benefited from investment that included replacing most of the traditional casks with large Slavonian oak barrels, with a few barriques added for balance. This formula has given new life to the estate, which is now managed by Cosimo's daughter Elia.

Great on it's own or enjoy with pasta dishes, meat dishes, fresh cheeses.

Wine Reviews

Dark red in the glass, it appears unfined and unfiltered, dark fruit, black plum, licorice, and anise on the nose. Medium bodied with good acid, bergamot and orange peel, red plum, raspberry. Easy drinking wine, fantastic for mussels and cioppino. Drink now. -DZ Aug 18
