Today's Wine Comments:

Just released: this is  jam-packed with value, rich Rhône red, every bit the equal of neighboring wines from Gigondas and even Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It comes from one of our favorite producers in the Rhône. And in fact Terra Ventoux is the combination of two local cooperatives that merged in 2003 to create a unique winery, a collaborative effort committed to producing and sharing the region’s best wines—from simple country bottles for everyday drinking to special cuvees from the Ventoux’s finest single vineyards.

The “Sablons” is a snappy red blend of Grenache and Syrah with a crushed velvet like softness in and mouth and layers of ripe red fruits mixed with ample spice. It’s a great summer sipper that pairs beautifully with foods cooked and enjoyed outdoors, and it’s the sort of Rhone red that can even benefit from 15 minutes in the fridge or on ice in the cooler. An unbeatable Quality- to-Price Ratio here, and lots to love for any red wine drinker.

Reasons why we love it:

  • Archeologists have discovered proof that wine has been made in what is now the Ventoux AOC since around the year 30 AD. The soil here is limestone rich with alluvial deposits as with the best sites throughout the Rhône Valley. The red grapes of Ventoux include Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault Mourvédre and Carignan, and the bold but balanced wines that are made from these varietals make typically spicy black fruited wines with an addictive black peppery bite.
  • At TerraVentoux the vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate that boasts cool nights and cold winters. This has a very positive effect on the grapes and allows the harvest to begin (on average) 10 days later than the rest of the Rhône Valley.

This is a gentle but very fruity blend of Grenache and Syrah with enough tannin and acidity to keep it fresh and appetizing.

In the heart of the southern Rhône Valley, TerraVentoux vineyards are located 20 minutes from Gigondas, Rasteau, and the hills ‘Dentelles de Montmirail’—and 30 minutes from Chateauneuf du Pape. It's on the foothills of the Mont-Ventoux 1912 meter high, and famous for the cycling Tour de France. A lot of people come there to cycle, hike, or climb. The Mont Ventoux region is classified Biosphere Reserve by the Unesco. A unique and very protected environment, blessed with the Mediterranean gastronomy: olives, fruit and vegetables, and (of course) truffles! TerraVentoux is a young winery, created in 2003 from a merge of two previous wineries.

A perfect bottle of wine for grilled red meats or Mediterranean style dishes. Also pairs with Goats cheese, Moussaka, and Pizza

Wine Reviews

This is an ode to the greatness of low-yielding Grenache.  It's pure on the nose with ripe raspberries.  Notes of rhubarb and pomegranate molasses fill the rich, velvety palate.  It's medium bodied but has plenty of power that comes from the Syrah in the blend, adding a darker component to an already complex, bright, juicy red.  Enjoy now through 2022. - DZ Jul 2017
