PLAY: “Black Door” – The Black Keys
“Mas-gran-plan-yol” is a winery located very near to the southern part of the Rhone Valley; in fact you could almost call this a baby Chateauneuf du Pape, as it is just 45 minutes south towards Montpellier. The blend is 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache in a juicy jammy style with ripe blackberry and dark cherry aromas. It also has a good down home fat dose of meaty funk, with a dash of earthy old leather and smoke, just like you walked in to a roadside Mississippi rib and tamale joint.
Light up the grill, because my ultimate pairing here would be with some tender pork baby back ribs, rubbed down with a dry spice mix of brown sugar, cumin, garlic, harissa, sweet smoked paprika, salt and black pepper. The key is the sauce however, and something with a bit of smoky, sweet heat would be amazing with this wine.
The Grammy Award winning Black Keys were formed by guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The minimalist, grungy, blues and rock sound is so thick and powerful and soulful, and this song in particular exemplifies what I would imagine the wine and the food would sound like.
