NV Pierre Moncuit 'Hughes de Coulmet' Blanc de Blancs Champagne

DRINK: Pierre Moncuit Hughes de Coulmet Blanc de Blanc Champagne NV

EAT:  Fried Chicken & Buttermilk Biscuits with honey butter

PLAY:  “Naughty Girl” – Beyonce

This bottle was a lifesaver at lunch in New Orleans at the famous Arnaud”s jazz brunch, as there wasn’t much on the wine list, and I got super lucky taking a shot on this affordable bottle of Champagne. Pierre Moncuit, is located in the legendary Grand Cru commune of Les Mesnil sur Oger, where most of its vineyards are located, except for this special bottling grown in the incredible village of Sezanne.  Unusually, the non-vintage bottlings like this one, are all actually from just one vintage as they keep no reserve. Founded in 1889 this is a top grower Champagne at a killer affordable price. “Blanc de Blanc” Champagne really is my favorite, because I love the richness and creamy texture of a 100% Chardonnay bubbly, with the refreshing lively citrus acidity and decadent baked apple, pear and toast. Guaranteed to please your neighbors and the wine geeks.

There’s not much that can compete with the salty, crunchy skin of southern fried chicken paired with the creamy, deluxe, refreshing acidity and richness of an all Chardonnay Blanc de Blanc Champagne.  Slather up that flaky buttermilk biscuit with a generous dollop of honey butter and top it with a crispy, tender piece of fried chicken thigh or breast nugget, take a big messy bite and a big glug of Champagne.  Damn life is good!

Naughty Girl is one of my favorite Beyonce songs, and every time I listen to it, I feel like eating some decadent down home food, drinking good wine and dancing in my living room. This is the perfect song for indulging, and only feeling guilty when the song is over, the food is gone and the bottle is tipped upside down in the ice bucket.

Chardonnay is the Madonna of the wine world. It expresses itself in drastically different ways depending on how you treat it and where its grown. Whether you’re headed to your country club in your mini van or indulging in Michelin-starred fare, this grape is meant for you. As the most planted white grape in the world, Chardonnay can express itself as the tart, mineral-driven style from Burgundy or the fuller bodied, oaky, and buttery style that it’s become known for in Napa. The only way to decide on which style you prefer is to taste, taste, taste!
