90pts -Wine Spectator | Saint-Emilion ★Neighbor

Owner Stephane Droulers has enlisted the assistance of wine making legends as he refined his Château de Carles Fronsac. Each masterful touch turned the famed fruit of Fronsac into something more memorable. Behind this deceptively priced bottle lies a secret treasure that rivals wines from neighboring Saint-Emilion and Pomerol.

Deep ruby velvet, glinting with purple. Heady earth and graphite.  Power.  Even if you don’t rule a kingdom, but you can still drink like it.

Why we love it:

  • Ah Bordeaux, the ultimate luxury wine. Fronsac, like its neighbors Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, has sandstone and limestone soils that keep the vineyard cool through the season and ensure the grapes reach ripeness in perfect condition. The region is renown for its balanced wines that, while elegant, maintain the power of great Bordeaux.
  • In the midst of Fronsac’s pretty, wooded hills and rolling vineyards, Château de Carles rises amide groomed gardens and ironwork fencing like something from a dream.  Stephane Droulers restored the property, giving the cream stonework walls and majestic grounds an aura of grandeur.
  • The bevvy of talent that brought this bottle to existence is awe inspiring. Oenological superstars Jean-Luc Thunevin and Dr. Alain Reynaud joined with Jean-Philippe Fort (of Michel Rolland’s Wine Consulting) have walked Château de Carles’ cellars. Each master, 2007, has made their mark on the style, the quality, and the glorious reputation of this wine.

Rock solid, with a core of steeped plum and blackberry paste, offset by a graphite edge. Showa briary grip through the finish. Should age well in the near term.

Stephane Droulers, married to Constance Chastenet de Castaing, has been at the helm of the property, alongside her, since 1983. Concurrently, he is a senior managing director to the famed international investment bank, Lazard Freres. A man of passion for everything he undertakes, Stephane Droulers has put all of his professional talent behind the undying quest for the absolute quality, on which he has embarked with Carles.
They have brought back to life the property's majesty and lustre of yesteryear and now produce there one of the finest Bordeaux wines, looking ahead to the day when they will be able to pass it on, in turn, to their daughters Eleonore and Oriane.
Since 2007, he has benefited from the expertise of Jean-Luc Thunevin and Doctor Alain Reynaud, legendary figures in the Libourne region, and took on board Jean-Philippe Fort, rising oenology star at Michel Rolland’s Wine Consultancy.

A Classic Rack of Lamb to pair with this classic Bordeaux. Also ideal to pair with beef, made with rich sauces.

Wine Reviews

Grand Vin is Right, This Stuff Rocks.

My first true introduction to wine was working on the vineyard in Bordeaux. It was there I got to see and experience the roots of the industry, both with my hands and my palate. It's hard work in the vines, something that makes you appreciate so much more what's in the bottle. This style of wine sings to me.

It starts with a light nose of soft berry & flint aromas. The palate is earthy, a good match for the Bordeaux lover. Graphite and mushroom sit well on a medium-full body with black currant, coffee grounds and grippy tannins. It shows more fruit and a bit cocoa through a medium finish. I'm taking my time with this wine. I'll spend all night if I have to.
