Today's Wine Comments:

Remote and austerely exotic Western Australia is the kinda place that gets wine industry veterans jazzed up, as the Cabs from this far-flung locale really do offer a truly unique take on this ubiquitous varietal and prove that terroir is a momentous factor in the way a wine smells and tastes.

This now fully matured Cab from the Folks at Brothers in Arms is a classic example of Western Australia Cab, made from prime vineyard land in the super hot (both in terms of temps and trendiness) Langhorne Creek appellation. Langhorne Creek Cabs are characterized by a resemblance in aroma and flavor to a fruit rarely encountered in the U.S.—the mulberry. So, what does that mean, for those of us who have yet to taste an actual honest to God mulberry? Bush berry and anise notes, dusty tannins and structure in spades, the Leading Horse Cabernet is a powerhouse of dense and finely structured fruit mixed with baking spice notes and ending with a warm dose of cedar. Drink this essentially Western Australia Cab with lamb or red meat.

Four reasons we love it:

The 2010 vintage was rated 95 points or “Superb” by the Wine Enthusiast, which notes that 2010 Cabernets from this region are not at peak of drinkability.

100% estate grown and sourced entirely from the Metala Vineyard in Western Australia’s famed Langhorne Creek appellation.

What is now the Metala Vineyard was first established as a horse breeding interest by owner and Prussian emigrant Herman Daenke in the mid 1800s. The land was purchased by William Fornby in 1882 and was planted to grapevines by William’s son Arthur in 1891. Miraculously, 7.4 acres of the original Cabernet and Shiraz vines are still there and produce amazingly concentrated fruit.

Yes, Langhorne Creek is HOT, routinely breaking 100 degrees during Australia’s summer. But the Metala Vineyard is kept pleasantly cool by the presence of Kale Alexandrina, just 5km away. A breeze known locally as the Lake Doctor aerates the canopy throughout the growing season and helps to slow ripening of the grapes.

Deep purple colour. Savoury biscuit, vanilla and spice aromas with menthol uplift. Huge berry fruit, pepper and cedar spice with a touch of rhubarb. A mouthfiling wine with superb textures, sublime integration and quenching mineral. The persistent length and fine grained, juicy tannins ensure this is a wine to be enjoyed with good food and fine company.

William Formby was among the early ardent pioneers of Langhorne Creek, he planted his first acreages of vine in 1891. Today his progeny still husband vines, the Adams of Langhorne Creek, are at the cutting edge of regional viticulture. Fruit is harvested from some of the most noble blocks on the Metala estate, to be fashioned into the enduring style of Aussie Cabernet Shiraz, a suitable match to roasts, stir frys or grills.

Try this with braised stews, grilled meat or charcuterie, or a roaring fire and a good book all pair well with this elegant cab.

Wine Reviews

The 2010 Leading Horse Cab is a reflection of it's ancient lineage, 100+ year old vines give the wine liquorice and black tea notes.  This wine is rich, earthy and concentrated, but at the same time totally balanced and creamy.  There's so much going on here, your patience will be rewarded.  All that rich, blackberry fruit, red currants, chocolate and sandalwood layered in together will remind you of a dish of berries and cream.  But the wine is powerful and complex, with lots of earth and spice lingering in the finish.  As good as it is, it'll be better in another 5-7 years. - DZ May 2017
