From Historic 120 Year Old Napa Winery...
The year was “spectacular” for Napa Cab, says Robert Parker, who called 2012 a “no brainer” for collectors and Cab enthusiasts of all stripes. Pope Valley created a masterpiece in this 96-point vintage, making a 100% Cab that is every bit the equal of this picture-perfect vintage. Crafted from the Eakle Ranch Vineyard, this Estate grown, 100% Cab delivers a two-fold pleasure: immediate gratification for those low on patience and cellar-worthy status for those who appreciate waiting out even more excellence.

The Wine Enthusiast notes: “blackberry and gunpowder showcase its 100% varietal devotion.” And winemaking choices reflect a total commitment to this—Napa’s crowning glory in wine varietals. This 2012 Cab was fermented in stainless steel and aged in a combination of new and neutral French oak. Bottled unfined, this beauty is a show-stopper of a Cab and one that is just beginning to open up, having shed a measure of its intense tannic structure to reveal a cassis and tobacco scented red with a plush feel in the mouth and secondary notes of cigar box and warm cedar. The family-owned Pope Valley Winery (established back in 1897, under its former name, Burgundy Winery & Olive Oil Factory) is poised to become our latest Member favorite.

“An ideal season,” says the Wine Spectator in the description of the 2012 vintage in Napa Valley, adding: “Cabernet Sauvignon shined brightest.” Up and down the Valley, wineries produced Cabs of serious weight, ripeness, complexity and—above all—balance. This elegant example from Pope Valley Winery is a lovely red to drink now and to enjoy over the next decade.

Reasons why we love it:

  • Robert Parker scored the 2012 Vintage a whopping 96 points or “Excellent.” From the Spectator: “Winemakers in Napa Valley were not only elated by the quality and quantity of the 2012 harvest, but a few see a level of excellence that supersedes past vintages, going back decades.”
  • Unlike many Cabernets from Napa, this one is 100% varietal Cab, a choice that was absolutely intentional at Pope Valley winery. Sourcing fruit from both estate vineyards and from neighboring sites, Pope Valley captured the very essence of deep and dark Napa Cabernet.
  • Though considered a Napa Valley sub-appellation, Pope Valley is in fact separated from Napa by the Howell Mountain range and has a distinct climate and terroir. This is the very northeastern corner of Napa Valley and one of the lesser known of Napa’s sub-appellations. Cabernets from this remote locale are typically a bit lighter and markedly less earthy than those made in other parts of the Valley.

This is truly a captivating and hedonistic wine. The nose shows aromas of a cedar cigar box. On the palate, the wine is long, unctuous and silky, with notes of blackberry and cocoa and an overall seamlessness and quiet power. The wine finisheswith touches of acidity and tannin which will ensure terrific aging. A feisty finish to a mouthful of stylishly integrated dark berry and mocha.

The Pope Valley Winery was founded in 1897 by Ed Haus as Burgundy Winery & Olive Oil Factory. A century later in 1997, the Eakle family, purchased the historic winery and gave it a new life as Pope Valley Winery. In 2009 the next generation of Eakles stepped in to continue building and furthering the family's vision for Pope Valley Winery as a fine winemaking establishment. Currently siblings, David Eakle as winemaker and Diana Eakle Hawkins as general manager, are making great strides in bringing Pope Valley Winery to the next level.

Whether as a match for prime rib and steaks or on its own for soulful sipping, this has the chops and the pedigree to please every Napa Cab lover.

Wine Reviews

The 2012 Cabernet from Pope Valley is powerful and dense, showing layers of ripe berry, cedar box and dark chocolate.  You can expect purity and a sense of self that can be lacking from the less reputable wineries of Napa Valley.  Our panel was fully behind this wine when tasted, it comes highly recommended. Enjoy now through 2026. - DZ Feb 2017
