Only 3 barrels produced!

  • There’s two players starring in today’s wine (of which there were only three barrels produced, so we were relieved to snag some).
  • The first is Rutherford: the word alone brings to mind some of the best Cab in Napa.
  • And the second is Petar Kirilov: Bulgarian-born winemaker, recently of Meadowcroft, founder and owner of the Kukeri label.  He’s been likened to an alchemist, as he made his name skillfully assembling grapes from a variety of vineyards into complex, powerful wines that demonstrate a finesse which highlights their unique terroir.  Now, he’s using Kukeri as a means to produce small lots of quality wines from single vineyards.
  • This bottle gets alchemical but still keeps it to a highly focused three vineyard blend from some of the best Cab growing regions in the Valley, a couple that are 1200 feet up the Mayacamas, and another that’s at the foot of its ranges.

From the winery:

On the palate, the deep, rich, and sophisticated flavors of black cherry, and ripe plum are interlaced with nuances of coffee beans, clove, and toasted oak. These distinct flavors are balanced with a round, supple texture; firm tanins; and a luxurious finish. The end result is a well-crafted Cabernet that is young, powerful and assertive, yet very complex, elegant and a pleasure to sip- especially as it opens up in the glass.

From the winery:

When you mention Rutherford to wine lovers, the first thing that usually comes to mind is one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Napa Valley.

The fruit of our 2015 Kukeri Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon are sourced from a vineyard located on the west side of Hwy 29 in the middle of the Rutherford "Bench". The grapes were handpicked in the beginning of October, sorted and de-stemmed into small fermentation bins and allowed to cold soak for 3 days to help stabilize the color and enhance flavor. It was fermented for 10 days and punched down 3 times a day, with an additional 5 days extended maceration to increase extraction producing Cabernet with concentrated "dusty" tanins and complex, and ripe flavors, trademark of the Rutherford appellation. The wine is then gently pressed and aged on fine lees for 24 months in 70/30 French and American barrels with 30% new French oak to preserve the delicate notes and mouthfeel.

This wine will pair perfectly with intense or rich meat dishes, specifically venison, lamb, or beef. The tanins and fruit in the wine will compliment the dense, protein-rich flavors in the meat.

Wine Reviews

Bust Out the Tiki Torches, It's Time for Another Kukeri Cab

If you were stuck on a desert island, what's the one wine you would want to have with you? Maybe Pinot for its light body, or maybe a crisp Albarino? The wine I would choose is a layered Cabernet, full of rich flavor and enough to make my belly warm at night. Kukeri has yet again crafted another winner, and exactly what I would choose to have on my island.

A rich nose of black cherry. Silky texture on the palate, with ripe oaky tannins and layered with delicious blackberry, red cherry, fig and dragonfruit. It's rounded out with juicy acidity, and leads into a long finish. I think some pull pork is in order, who's ready for a luau?
