CellarThief Exclusive!

Direct from a founding member of California’s prestigious Meritage association, this Sonoma Cab hits all the right notes. Typically only found in the winery, our Team was crafty enough to score a few cases for our own inventory, giving our Members one of those top secret exclusives that make us weak in the knees.

Reasons we love it:

  • A darling of Sonoma. We can’t say enough good things about Lyeth’s current winemaker Katie Carter. Born and raised a few miles from the RRV’s DeLoach Vineyards, it is quite fitting that she eventually ended up their assistant winemaker. Now, she’s one of the region’s favorite up-and-coming young winemakers who makes wine for two of the Boisset Collection’s wineries: Wattle Creek and Lyeth.
  • Yields down, quality up. We’re quickly becoming fans of the Excellent 2015 vintage with all of its profound beauty. The drawback? There isn’t much of it to go around. Antonio Galloni notes “low, sometimes unnaturally low, yields give the 2015s remarkably dense, plush fruit. At the same time, the wines have generally retained extraordinary freshness and aromatic presence.”
  • French influence. Lyeth’s founders were greatly influenced by the storied winemaking traditions of France. We found that the perfect turn of events has resulted in the label now being a part of the famed Burgundy producer Boisset’s California wine portfolio.

This is a complex wine with enticing aromas that are immediately evident upon opening the bottle. Deep crimson in color, the wine spreads across the palate with layers of black currant, Bing cherry and cocoa.

Lyeth Estate, established by Chip Lyeth in 1981, was one of the first wineries in California to pursue the unique complexity and composition achieved by the marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon and the other traditional Bordeaux varieties. Wines of this style, known as Meritage, have become some of the world’s most highly-rated wines. The word Meritage (pronounced like “heritage”) is a combination of the words merit and heritage. Lyeth, one of the founding members of the Meritage Association founded in 1988, has played an integral role in helping to define this unique style of winemaking. Today, Lyeth continues its legacy of blending family and tradition in its Sonoma County wines, winning praise from critics and consumers worldwide.

The wine displays a nice tannin structure and would pair excellently with grilled meats and hard cheeses such as Parmigiano and Romano.

Wine Reviews

The 2015 Cabernet from Lyeth is a brand new, winery only wine made from select grapes in Sonoma County.  The fruit sources are considerably better than the lower teir wines from Lyeth, and that fact really shines through in the finished product.  You can expect layers of cherry and plum, with cigar box, sweet tobacco and baking spice.  The palate is firm and well textured, with a vibrant acidity and sweet tannin on the finish.  Enjoy now through 2022. - DZ Jul 2017
