Excellent Carignan-Grenache-Syrah Blend

Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot have taken Burgundy style to the glorious soils of Languedoc-Roussillon. The region known for supple, easy drinking reds enchanted the winemaking power duo. Upon their first sighting of Les Cazelles in Minervois, it was love at first sight. The new challenge, the incredible fruit, and the remarkable skills have all led to this singular bottle. The combination of generous black fruit, layered earth, and spice, it’s a bottle with one helluva pedigree AND a sense of adventure.


Why we love it:

  • Anne Gros has a way with wine. Her skills and those of partner Jean-Paul Tollot represent half a century of wine growing mastery. While they both honed their craft in Burgundy, it was love at first sight when they discovered their Cazelles in Minervois. The diverse landscape of limestone and sandstone soils, the robust flavors of the grapes, and (of course) their incredible location just at the base of Black Mountain.
  • The grand grapes of Languedoc have a special place in wine culture. Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan that hold high positions in the Rhone (just to the northeast) take on a more delicate, approachable demeanor in this part of the countryside. This bottle is delicate, the tight dance between sweet black fruit and solid tannin structure remaining light and airy enough to refresh with every sip.
  • While the grapes grow in Languedoc, Gros and Tollot take their cellar work in a decidedly more Burgundian direction. Hand harvested fruit ferments in steel tanks to preserve its beautiful, dark fruit character.

This cuvee is born of the blending of 3 cepages to form a table wine, a real one !!!
Issue from a majority of our 25 years grenache, it is joined by Syrah and young Carignan of 35 year's old. Having matured in stainless steel tanks, this wine is delicate, fruity and tense. Its vocation is to be refreshing and fresh, glass after glass... during a meal.

A new adventure
Anne Gros and Jean Paul Tollot, two winegrowers in Burgundy for over 20 years, have combined their expertise to serve the fine terroirs in Cazelles, in the Minervois !!! Love at first sight ?... Absolutely ! Reflection ?... Of course !

We chose Cazelles for the diversity of its soil, made of limestone, clay and sandstone, for the discovery of 4 main cepages (Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault), for the quality and the wide age range of its vines, the privileged environment at the foot of the Black Mountain, its altitude of 220 metres (identical to Vosne- Romanée).
A building was created to grow, receive, make and care for these fine terroir wines. It has been designed with great attention to detail, respecting the energies, the wines and the people... A beautiful architectural structure made of simple but noble materials...terracotta, wood, stainless steel... Roundness is eveywhere... the road, the hills, the tanks, the barrels... the wines.

It underlines everything and yet takes second place with cold meats, tapas, red meat grilled or in sauces.

You've Heard of GSM, This is GSC.

And it makes for a hearty red that is a great addition to any dinner table (I'll be finishing this one off this evening). Southern France blends are a growing category, and La 50/50 is ahead of the curve. 

Robust nose of tobacco and plum. Tart raspberry, red currant, juicy cranberry, nectarine. Earthy tones showing on the medium finish. I'm thinking I'll cook up a nice steak tonight for this one. 91 Points - JZ January '18
