Italian for “strong,” Trinchero saves the best of its formidable estate vineyards for Forte—a wine that more than lives up to its name and the considerable hype foisted upon it by the wine press.

“The 2013 Forte is a rich, full-bodied, concentrated and intense proprietary red blend… capable of lasting 30 years,” writes Robert Parker, anointing this one with 93 points. Another 93-point score by The International Wine Report, which writes: “The tannins and plush mouthfeel accentuate this lovely wine. If enjoying young, be sure to give this beautiful wine at least an hour in the decanter to fully express itself.”

Conspicuously absent from this “beautiful” Bordeaux blend is Cabernet Sauvignon—an uber-popular varietal, of course, and one that tends to make up the vast majority of Meritage-styled wines from Napa Valley. The 2013 Forte is 74% Malbec, 13% Cabernet Franc, 12% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot. Lovers of Cab Sauv will not miss it, however, as this potent, downright sexy wine has all the brawn and fruit that anyone could ask for along with balance, structure and a rich mouthfeel that imbues the palate with blackberries, graphite and fully integrated oak. This big boy will grow up into a graceful adult with cellar time, though it is hard to resist this offer’s youthful charms now.

Four reasons we love it:

  • The Wine Enthusiast scored the 2013 vintage a whopping 95 points or “Superb.”
  • Four evocatively named estate vineyards were sourced for this strapping red: Haystack in Atlas Peak and Cloud’s Nest in Mount Veeder for the Malbec, Central Park West in St. Helena for both Cab Franc and Petit Verdot and Vera’s for Merlot.
  • All four of these estate-owned vineyards practice sustainable farming methods and grapes were harvested by hand.
  • Trinchero was established back in 1948 when Mario Trinchero moved his wife and three young children from NYC to Napa Valley and bought an abandoned pre-Prohibition-era winery.

A vibrant, elegant red wine, it delivers intricate aromas of lavender and juicy blackberry on the nose. Layered flavors of spiced ripe plum and cassis are revealed across a multi-layered palate, framed by smooth tannins and a voluptuous mouthfeel.

Trinchero Napa Valley is located north of the town of St. Helena, in a knoll with Spring Mountain to the west and Howell Mountain to the east. The 22 acre site has 13 acres of Cabernet vines and houses our brand-new winery, hospitality center and tasting room. Every detail of the design was conceived to create and share exceptional wines.

Pair this wine with port wine-braized beef short ribs, beef tenderloin with blackberry dressing, or roasted duck breast with pecan purée.

Wine Reviews

"Forte" Means Strong in Italian, Most Fitting For a Strong Wine

When I'm looking for something a little nicer than just your average table wine, I want it to be a wine that exudes strength. Strength of character, that is. Trinchero is often an excellent go-to for just that style, and their Forte blend has fine layers of complexity that hold up to my expectations. As it should at the higher tier!

Rich violet aromas float up from the glass. Full bodied with finely tuned tannins and creamy tones of black cherry, cassis, blueberry, cinnamon and oak. It has a lengthly finish that sits well on the palate. This wine is drinking well now, and could even lay down for at least a few years for even smoother tannins.

"Lastly, the 2013 Forte is rich, full-bodied, concentrated and intense proprietary red blend. It is dense ruby/purple, full-bodied and capable of lasting 30 years."- Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

"Opaque violet color. Fruity, spicy, herbal aromas and flavors of savory herbs and flowers, pickled citrus peels, and spiced berries with a satiny, vibrant, fruity medium-to-full body and a smooth, complex, long dried cherries and blueberries, cedar, leather, and earth finish with chewy, fine tannins and moderate oak. A bold, spicy, herbal red blend with nice pairing and cellaring possibilities."- BTI
