Southwest France's famed Tannat grape debuts a smash hit in this Napa red-blend!

Nothing says California like this bottle made by the owners of Y. Rousseau Winery, named a Top 100 winery by Wine & Spirits magazine. A real party pleaser, this red blend hits all the high notes: lighthearted and kissed by the sun yet has so much aroma and flavor packed in the bottle we’re praising CA’s 2014 vintage over and over. The final words from our Tasting Panel were “buy it now and drink it often as Winemaker Yannick Rousseau really knows how to make an award-winning Tannat blend!”

Reasons why we love it

  • A French touch. Winemaker Yannick Rousseau is a Gascony native and brings some French heritage to his California wines. By starting this red off with Tannat (another Gascony local) he strives for modest tannins and pleasing fruits. Yannick’s grandfather and father were both farmers, winemakers and country butchers with deep French roots. This bottle - named ‘Son of a Butcher’ and all - is a direct tribute to Yannick’s legacy.
  • Approachable blend. We have become a little obsessed with how the red Tannat grape has migrated from the rough and rugged terrain in the south of France to California’s golden coast. “Deep, dark, dry and rustic” describe the varietal well and Yannick decided to use a traditional winemaking approach adding Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc to the blend. This created a softer final result made to approach both now and later.
  • Flavorful vineyards. A true California blend, the grapes were sourced from the Russian River Valley (specifically Alder Springs Vineyard and Saralee's Vineyard for Tannat), Mt. Veeder (Cab and Cab Franc) and Sonoma Mountain (Merlot).
  • A favorite winemaker. Before launching Y. Rousseau in 2008 with his wife Susan, Yannick gained serious winemaking skill sets as assistant winemaker at Newton Vineyards and winemaker at Chateau Potelle Winery. Why California? Because he fell in love with Napa Valley and wanted to dedicate his life to small-lot, artisanal wines.

A very tasty and rather complex wine, this blends ripe and friendly fruit flavors with spicy accents like cedar and nutmeg, and wraps them in a smooth texture. Unusually composed of 45% Tannat followed by several red Bordeaux varietals, it's medium bodied, well balanced and should be versatile before or during a meal.

In 2008, Yannick and his Texas-born wife and accomplice Susan started Y. Rousseau Wines. Before getting there, Yannick honed his winemaking skills as an assistant winemaker at Newton Vineyards and later as a winemaker at Chateau Potelle Winery.

Yannick hadn't planned to stay in California for a long time when he moved here from France. But he fell in love - first, with Napa Valley terroir and then, with his wife Susan. Together, they have put all their knowledge, experience, and passion in the Y. Rousseau project, crafting small-lot, artisanal wines.

Yannick stays deeply connected to his French roots. He will always remain the son and grandson of a farmer, home winemaker, and country butcher.

Perfect with red meats. Try it with grilled foods in the warmer months and long slow braised dishes in the cooler months.

Wine Reviews

My father was a butcher! A jammy blackberry and dark fruit medley jumps right into the nose. Dry with oaky tannins, complemented by flavors of black current and ripe black cherry pie. A quick finish that keeps bringing you back for more. You'll want this one at the dinner table. 93 Points - JZ September '17
