Jean Charles Boisset purchased Raymond Vineyards in 2009, two years after his inclusion in Decanter magazine’s Top 50 Power Brokers in the global wine industry and one year after Wine Enthusiast named him “Innovator of the Year.” In the blink of an eye, Boisset turned a top-performing Napa estate into a one of the world’s great wineries by converting all of Raymond’s impressively sweeping 300 acres under vine to organic and biodynamic farming, and by creating a range of wines that please crowds as well as critics.

·Raymond is one of Napa Valley’s great estates and a consistent over achiever throughout its 40+ years. Though now part of the Boisset family of wineries, the Raymond family (the fifth generation, that is) continues to be an integral part of operations here—as has been the case for five generations.

·The Director of Winemaking at Raymond is Stephanie Putnam, formerly of Far Niente Winery and Hess Collection—two of Napa Valley’s most revered brands.

·Raymond’s Merlot is largely crafted from the estate’s famed Jameson Canyon Vineyard toward the southern end of the Napa Valley.

This estate-grown Merlot comes from the southern reaches of the Napa Valley where cooling influences from the nearby San Pablo Bay recreate a Bordeaux-like climate to match the vineyard’s nutrient-poor, clayey soil. Drink now or hold onto this luscious, plummy red for the next five or so years.

Raymond Vineyards, founded in 1970, is one of Napa Valley’s great estates. Arriving in 1933, the Raymond family became deeply connected to the valley’s winemaking origins, ultimately creating a 90-acre estate straddling Rutherford and St. Helena in the heart of the Napa Valley that remains today one of Napa’s pioneering original estates. Through the years Raymond has built its enduring reputation for elegant wines with a beautiful balance of finesse, power and complexity. Five generations of the Raymond family imbued the winery with a sense of its deep roots in the Napa Valley and a commitment to honor those roots, the estate, and the family tradition through every wine produced.

Raymond has continued its tradition of family winemaking by becoming a part of the Boisset Family Estates collection of wineries in August 2009. With the 2009 Fall harvest came an increased commitment to producing the highest quality Napa Cabernet – select new Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards were added, and early in 2010 organic farming methods were implemented in pursuit of eventually achieving organic certification for the estate vineyards, a hallmark of Boisset properties worldwide.

This robust merlot pairs well with stuffed mushrooms, Grilled Flat Iron Steak with Blue Cheese Butter,  Mediterranean Lamb Burgers and Roast Chicken with Thyme and Onions.

The more serious wines start with the 2014 Merlot Reserve, which is 88% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec. This spent 18 months in a combination of different French cooperage. This wine has the classic Merlot character of roast coffee, cocoa, chocolate, black cherry and plum-like fruit. It is medium to full-bodied, plush and ideal for drinking over the next 10-12 years. -Robert Parker

Rock candy and bright lemon flavors form the core of this young, tightly wound white, wrapped in toasty oak. A stony, gravelly texture gives it a touch of complexity. -Wine Enthusiast

Another winner from one of our favorite wineries, the Raymond Merlot is a well-balanced example of what this grape is supposed to be. Ripe cassis and violet flowers on the nose, leading into a medium-full bodied palate of black cherry, blackberry and a light fennel seed. A great everyday drinker. 92 Points - JZ Oct '18
