Carignan-dominant Minervois is fast being supplanted by Syrah and grenache;  and in Minervois, quality comes down to altitude, yield, and soil.  Obviously we were ravenous when we heard that the 2011 Anne Gros La 50/50 dabbles in both standards of new-age Minervois excellence.

  • Of the five zones within Minervois, winemaking couple Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot chose the Causse, known for its high altitude of 200-500 meter, which results in the lowest night-time temperatures in the Minervois and a lower thermal heating in the spring, making it the latest zone to be harvested.  The limestone soils of the semi-mountainous zone also lend the ground to indirect reheating of the vines and grapes.
  • They found superb Syrah and Grenache vines in the Causse (as well as some [traditional] top notch Carignan) and created this cuvee from three cepages.
  • 2011’s higher rainfall gave way to a warmer, drier spring, keeping the grapes on their toes for an already-low yield and created an incredibly well-balanced wine that’s in its perfect drinking window right now.  This is definitely one to stock up on to have some grilling-friendly reds on hand throughout the Summer.

With its rich and intense flavors, this table wine can be enjoyed in multiple glasses. It also has hints of blackberry and a faint floral undertone.

This cuvee is born of the blending of 3 cepages to form a table wine, a real one !!!

Issue from a majority of our 25 years grenache, it is joined by Syrah and young Carignan of 35 year's old. Having matured in stainless steel tanks, this wine is delicate, fruity and tense. Its vocation is to be refreshing and fresh, glass after glass... during a meal.

This wine pairs great with everything from grilled pork chops and Burgundy beef stew to chicken satay and Indian cuisine.

Spicy's the name, Minervois is the game. An earthy tobacco and plum nose. The palate is full bodied with tones of pomegranate, black cherry, cigar box, cinnamon and fresh herbs. A must-have for any bold-red lovers. 92 Points - JZ June '18
