100% Estate Grown, 90 points Wine Spectator

Since 2003 this family-owned Willamette Valley estate has quietly gone about collecting 196 of the most prestigious wine awards out there—including a coveted Top 100 from the Wine Spectator, and yet few wine lovers know about Cardwell Hill.

The 2014 vintage—given a 96-point rating from the Wine Spectator and 93-point scores from the Wine Enthusiast and the Wine Advocate—produced amazing Pinot Noirs, especially in the Willamette where an early harvest followed a long, warm growing season that brought in perfect Pinot fruit. Cardwell Hill’s estate vineyard was no exception. Planted to a variety of Pinot clones and farmed with nature-friendly methods exclusively, this site enjoys some of the best terroir in all of the Willamette.

Cardwell Hill’s 2014 Pinot is packed with cherry and raspberry fruit, showing notes of lingering spice from time in French oak and a finish that brings in layers of juicy acidity and judicious tannins. Designed as a food wine, this Oregon Pinot would make for a winsome match for seafood, poultry or cheese-based dishes.

Four reasons we love it:

  • Cardwell Hill uses sustainable agricultural practices only and the winery’s estate vineyards are certified by Salmon Sake and LIVE (Low Impact Viticulture and Enology).
  • The winery itself uses gravity flow technology to quickly and gently sort and move the grapes to crush—within two hours of being hand harvested!
  • New and neutral French oak, more specifically 100% Seguin Moreau barrels, were used in the maturation of this red.
  • This estate-grown Pinot was sourced from Wadenswil, Pommard, Dijon 115 and Dijon 777 clones—the top Pinot vines currently en vogue for textured, full-bodied Pinot Noir.

This is an elegant wine that has flavors of black raspberry and pomegranate. The aromas that you'll smell are that of plum and ripe cherry.

From the winery:

Along the southernmost slope of Cardwell Hill, the vineyard encompasses a total of 57 acres. Thirty eight acres are now planted with Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris Vines. Eight-five percent of the plantings are Pinot Noir.

The region’s rainfall, which approaches an average of 40 inches per year, creates a natural supply of water that seeps deep into the ground at the higher elevations and then slowly percolates down the slopes throughout the summer months.

Taking advantage of this natural flow of subterranean moisture, Cardwell Hill Cellars utilizes a “dry farming” approach. Meticulous care is taken to adhere to environment friendly practices and to utilize sustainable agricultural techniques in every aspect of the cultivation of quality wine grapes.

With great pride, owner Dan Chapel, proclaims, “only the juice of the grape is removed from the vineyard – all of the stems, skins, seeds and cuttings are cultivated back into the land.”

Cardwell Hill has been certified both “Salmon Safe” and “LIVE”. Vineyard practices meet or exceed the rigorous standards set forth by this grower organization.

This wine will pair perfectly next to a lovely salmon dish or a meal containing meat or duck.

They Say Willamette is the Burgundy of NA

And it's producers like Cardwell that have people flocking to the valley, anxious to get their hands on the Burg of the New World. It's certainly my favorite style of Pinot, and exactly why I chose to pick this up. Simple yet satisfying, that's one of my basic mantras.

The nose shows a bouquet of strawberry flowers. It has a fruity palate of wild woodland strawberry and light cranberry. The finish goes out mid-length with a slightly tannic tone. 92 Points - JZ January '18
