Rare Gem | "Round, Velvety & Harmonic"

Truly a wine worth savoring. The 2013 Le Marognole I Corsi is an Italian classic that harkens to us from the depths of history. Dark and intense, this spiced bottle encapsulates the stone walls and panoramic views of the local terraced hillsides in Veneto’s Marano Valley. Made of ancient local grapes using methods which have stood the test of time and tradition, its no wonder that Marognole’s I Corsi is one of this famed regions stand out producers.

Blend: Corvina & Corvinone (60%), Rondinella (30%), Croatina (7%), Molinara (3%)

Why we love it:

  • Valpolicella Classico stands tall as one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions. Here, where the sun beams brightly over terraced vineyards encircled by low stone walls, fresh Alpine breezes creep along the hillsides and through dales. Meaning “valley of many cellars” its easy to lose yourself in the history and beauty of the region.
  • The ancient grapes Le Marognole I Corsi grows to play an important role in this wine’s standing. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara are the indigenous grapes which families here have grown, harvested, and vinified for generations. The powerhouse, stand-alone grape, Corvina, makes wines of exceptional tannin structure and enveloping aromas.
  • The winery itself is named for the low-lying stone walls which weave and wander through the region. Called “marogne” in the local Italian dialect, these walls clamber over hills and along terraces to delineate superior vineyards. Fabio Corsi founded his family winery, Le Marognole, in 2004. He’s certainly succeeded in his mission to deliver the rich regional and family history in each bottle.
  • Black fruit and spiced plum are the trademark flavors of this glassful. Delicate whispers of chocolate and heady notes of spice will speak to you through every sip. Perfect with classic Italian dishes (tomato and onion pizza, grilled bread and cured meat, take your pick), this bottle is the truest Italian experience.

On the nose are dancing aromas of red cherry and fresh leather. They both flow onto the palate, the red cherry morphing to black, and notes of black currant and anise showing towards the back end. Medium bodied with high acidity gives an excellent balance. It settles with more cherry on the finish. Delicious throughout, and shows more fruit as it breaths.

Roberto Corsi purchased the land located in the heart of Valgatara di Marano di Valpolicella, and planted the vineyards in the 1970s.  For thirty years, the Corsi family produced classic regional varieties for sale to the renowned Valpolicella  and Amarone producers.  The winery was born in 2004 when son, Fabio, trained in the classical production methods by local winemakers, produced their first Valpolicella wines under their own estate label.

Today, assisted by his family, father Roberto, mother Maristella, and wife Eleonora, Fabio throws his heart and soul into producing five classic wines: Valpolicella Classico, “El Nane" Rosso Verona, Valpolicella Ripasso, Amarone, and Recioto.

Best with braised meats (especially lamb), roast game, and very mature, piquant cheese. Try it with raw tuna or sushi, or make it a romantic night in with Thai, Vietnamese, or Indian cuisine.

Wine Reviews

Valpolicella is a Wine Everyone Should Experience.

Especially when you can find it at a great price. It remains one of the most interesting Italian reds I've had the pleasure of experiencing. I highly recommend jumping in with Le Marognole's I Corsi. This is an excellent intro to a very particular style of wine (after the Classico you can easily make the jump to Ripasso and Amarone.
