92pts - James Suckling | 90pts -Vinous

Taking home a gold medal from the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge as well as 92 points from James Suckling and 90 from Vinous is all in a days work for this workhouse red featuring bold blueberry pie aromatics and an abundance of fresh-picked cherry and concentrated purple fruit.

Generous and jammy--just the way we like our South Aussie Shiraz--this bargain breaks out from the pack with underlying complexity in the form of crushed peppercorn and earthy, savory smoke notes. Just the ticket with hickory smoked foods—even salmon.

·      Englishman Thomas Gross immigrated to Australia with wife Mary and their children back in 1849, making Gross one of McLaren Vale’s true pioneers.

·      The future grape farmer found initial success in Australia’s version of the Gold Rush, which occurred at the very same point in history as the California Gold Rush.

·      Made from a selection of McLaren Vale Shiraz, this wine was also partially sourced from vines planted on the original Gross property—one of McLaren Vale’s oldest vineyards.

·      The 2015 vintage in McLaren Vale was rated 94 points or “Outstanding” by the Wine Advocate and 91 points and “Excellent” by the Wine Enthusiast

This wine is rich and generously loaded with black fruits, red cherry and spice on the palate. The finish is long lasting, delicious, dense and fruit packed.

From the winery:

One of the original McLaren Vale pioneers, Thomas Goss, his wife Mary and their children arrived in South Australia from Devonshire in 1849. After success in the Victorian gold fields he established an iconic farming property in McLaren Vale which is now home to some of the region’s leading vineyards. These wines are a tribute to Thomas Goss's contribution to our beloved region.
McLaren Vale has an unrivalled reputation in Australia and indeed the world, for constantly producing first-class wines. It has one of the most consistent, Mediterranean-style climates in which to grow premium wine grapes.

The unequivocally cool climate of the Adelaide Hills and very old podsolic soils of low to moderate fertility make for ideal growing conditions. This gives the region an enviable and growing reputation for magnificent white grapes.

Cool-climate Syrah, with its peppery spices, is a natural match with flavorful Moroccan-spiced lamb dishes, where the spice is more about flavor than heat. With Australian Shiraz, grown in warmer regions, heavy meat dishes with abundant protein and fat are a necessity to match the intensity of the wine.

Wine Reviews

"Aromas of blackberries, dark cherries and lemon zest. Medium to full body that is dense and tight with lots of peppercorns and berries on the aftertaste." - James Suckling

Wines with Long Histories Often Have More than Great Stories...
They also have great qualities. At least, that's the case with Thomas Goss. It grabbed my ears with its origin story of the McLaren Vale, and it grabbed my full attention with its full-sized flavor.

Plum jam on the nose. Savory tannin on a robust and layered palate. Dark chocolate, raspberry and nectarine skin flow into a juicy berry finish. Ripe and ready for picking. 92 Points - JZ May '18
