91-93 Vinous | Unfined -Unfiltered

"The 2012 Syrah The Recluse Broken Leg Vineyard is racy, exuberant and generous..." writes Vinous.

Organically farmed, fermented with native yeast, minimal sulfur, no plastic in the winery, unfined/unfiltered. The grapes for this wine come from the Broken Leg Vineyard, which sits 600 feet above the Navaro River. It's cooler here than the typical Syrah vineyard, which makes for a dark, brooding wine that's more savory than fruit driven.

A magical place tucked between forested hillsides on the way to the Mendocino coast, the Anderson Valley is seemingly lost in time. Its cool weather is ideal for growing Pinot Noir in the lowlands and high-elevation spicy Syrah in the hills. Known for its sheep farms and residents seeking a quieter way of life, the valley remains unblemished and home to many original old-vine plantings.

Notes of boysenberry, pomegranate, and hints of leather will please your palate.

From the winery:

Donkey & Goat Winery is owned and operated by Jared & Tracey Brandt in Berkeley, California. We make “natural wines” which is a term that covers both the vineyard and the cellar. That is what distinguishes natural wine– the extension of natural farming philosophies that drive the practices for sustainable, natural & biodynamic farming into the cellar.

Our wines are made from sustainably (or more) farmed vineyards in the Sierra Nevada, Mendocino and Napa. In the cellar nothing is removed and nothing is added save minimal effective sulphur. Sulphur is a contentious issue in the natural wine world. We have made wines with zero sulphur added but in general we do use minimum effective sulphur. Or we use as little as possible and our levels going into bottle fall within the predominant guideline for natural wines in Europe. Our wines are bottled without stabilization, fining or filtration. While not required, we include our ingredient list on our label which is remarkably short: grapes and minimal sulphur. We have made our wines in this manner since we created Donkey & Goat in 2004 and will continue to do so until we stop.

Pair with beef, grilled meats, barbecue, eggplant, or roasted tomatoes.

Wine Reviews

The 2012 Syrah The Recluse Broken Leg Vineyard is racy, exuberant and generous, especially next to the 2011. Dark red cherry, plum, licorice, mint and sweet spices are all woven together nicely in an effortless, gracious wine that shows considerable promise. The generous vintage balances some of the wilder characteristics of this windy site in 2012. -Vinous

Syrah from Anderson Valley is something that gets us excited. Allow this wine to breathe. Open the bottle while starting to cook your favorite grilled meat dish. In the glass you'll enjoy savory flavors along with currant and pomegranate notes.-Premier Sommelier Team
