Lovers of stick-to-your-ribs, stunning Zinfandel should not miss this one: a multiple 90+-point winner from our dear friend Ed Sbragia. “A gutsy version, with bold blackberry and licorice aromas and plump black cherry, briary sage and pepper flavors,” writes the Wine Spectator. Little wonder—Sbragia and son Adam are two hard-working wine folks who know Zinfandel like the backs of their hard-working hands.

Gino’s Vineyard is a 5-acre site home to 55-year-old Zinfandel vines. It also happened to be the favored playground for a young Ed, who scrambled up and down the rocky hillsides and between the gnarled vines. For this 2015 Zin estate fruit from established vines at La Promessa, Forchini and Bernier vineyards were also sourced, providing an awesome jumping off point for Sbragia’s blending talents. As is the custom for old-fashioned Zin, a touch of Carignan (15%) and Petite Sirah (5%) also from this quartet of vineyards makes its way into this chewy, ripe red, which is then aged for 18 months in French oak. A wowser anytime but especially winning when served with BBQ.

·   The 2014 vintage for Sonoma Zin got 93 points or “Excellent” from the Wine Advocate and the Wine Enthusiast.

·   Winemaker Ed Sbraglia was pretty much raised in Gino’s Vineyard and played among the gnarled, old vines on this rocky hillside as a youngster.

·   By now a firmly entrenched Wine Country legend, Sbragia earned his chops at Beringer Winery working up the ranks of this massive operation to become Beringer’s winemaster (a position he maintained for 32 years).

·   Eager to launch his own label, Sbragia enlisted son Adam—and voila, a true family winery was born! This Zinfandel and the main source of its fruit was named in honor of Ed’s father, Gino, a first-generation American and big-time lover of Zin.

From the winemaker:

To make the best wine for your table, there is a time-honored tradition of blending in Dry Creek Valley. It starts in the vineyard, with field blends of Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah and other varieties. And it continues in the winery, blending different vineyards to produce a wine with classic Dry Creek Valley character. Gino’s Zinfandel represents a traditional field blend that my grandfather, Gino, made each year. This vintage is full of lush ripe red fruit. It has a core of sweet red currant and strawberry with a bright finish which make this a great match for many foods.

From the winery:

As the master winemaker at the famed Beringer winery in Napa for over 32 years, Ed Sbragia has made wine from every great vineyard in Northern California. Sbragia Family Vineyards is a dream Ed has had for many years, a small, family-owned winery making limited lots of wine from blocks of his favorite grapes, including his family's own Dry Creek vineyards. With his son Adam, Ed also focuses on extremely small production wines from spectacular sites, such as this 2005 Rancho Del Oso Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pair this with lamb shanks, pork ribs, or anything barbecued!

Wine Reviews

A gutsy version, with bold blackberry and licorice aromas and plump black cherry, briary sage and pepper flavors. Drink now through 2022. -Wine Spectator

Dusty and peppery, this big-boned wine leans into tart red-fruit flavors like cranberry and strawberry, with a thickness of tannin at its core. Leather, coffee and cinnamon swirl around adding seasoning to its overall length and breadth on the palate. -Wine Enthusiast

A solid nose of cranberry, wildflower and white pepper. The palate is strong and layered, showing raspberry jam, rosemary, plum skin, blueberry, raw chocolate and cinnamon. It has a bright berry medley through the finish. Ready to drink through the next 4-5 years. 91 Points - JZ Sept '18
