92 Points & Editors' Choice -Wine Enthusiast

92 points and Editors' Choice for the team at Scott Harvey Wines, who’ve treasured and perfected California’s pride and joy, the Zinfandel grape, and set the bar high for the Shenandoah Valley in Amador County.

  • One of the premier Zinfandel-growing regions in the state, Amador County boasts old vines and granite soils perfect for cultivating them into distinctive, earthy, and full bodied wines by the time they end up in the bottle.
  • 95% Zinfandel from the 40-year old vines at the Bowman Vineyard; evened out with 3% Syrah and 2% Barbera for added earthiness.
  • 2014 was a drought vintage, producing lower yields of smaller, more exceptional fruit.
  • With a good amount of natural tannin, this wine has great ageing potential, though we’d recommend drinking sometime between now and the next 3 years.
  • Less zesty and spicy than your typical California Zinfandel, this is distinctly old world and claret like, and will round out any Zin-aficionado’s cellar nicely.

From the winery:

The smell of a fresh rain on a dusty road. Chocolate covered cherries abound in this red fruit wine. Cranberry mixed with mincemeat show through this extractive claret style “Old World Style Zinfandel”. A rich mouth feel adds to the rounded complexity and long lingering finish of this medium bodied wine.

From the winery:

In 1979 Scott developed an ambitious winery plan for the Santino family. As Winemaker and General Manager of Santino Winery, Scott is credited with placing Amador County firmly on the California wine map. Crafting the best wines possible from the soils and climatic conditions of the region, Santino and later Renwood benefited from Scott’s German training and innovative style. Becoming one of the leading wineries in Amador County, and garnering critical acclaim, the wine world was paying attention. Amador County was now recognized as a world-class wine-growing appellation.

From the winery:

Try this food friendly Zinfandel with any grilled meat or chicken or pair with pizza, pasta or burgers!

Wine Reviews

"Good concentration and a nicely tannic velvety texture make a great combination in this gutsy full-bodied wine. The aromas and flavors favor sunbaked earth, ripe plum, sage and beef juices, creating a complex and brawny character that will pair awesomely with a grilled steak or chop." -Wine Enthusiast
